We should all take risks – shouldn’t we?

As you know the last month has been fairly challenging for me,  I missed a month.

Now I’m able to lift my head up, I’ve realised that I’ve got back into my comfort zone, and that’s no good when you’ve got goals to achieve. Is it?

During May I did everything people asked of me. I ticked things off my lists, and felt good doing it. But I felt that I wasn’t achieving anything. I was, but I didn’t FEEL like I was.

As I’m updating my goals, after a motivational session with Emma Wimhurst, as part of her BOOM! programme, I realise that I HAVE to take steps out of my comfort zone and into that risky area to be able to move forward. I was prompted again today by Seth Godin’s blog Disaster Tolerance, which talks about how we can plan for disasters, or at least reduce the risk to ourselves and our business of crises taking us down. And by getting used to this way of working, we become more tolerant and our comfort zone expands.

My list last night listed ALL the steps required to achieve goals I set in January. When I was talking with Emma I realised that I’ve done the work, which I found easy. I just haven’t done the hard part, (to me), of promoting the piece of work to others! Now how on earth will anyone know what bras4mums and the Bra Lady network can do for them if I don’t tell them?

And why haven’t I done it before now?

I guess it’s my lizard brain (I’m reading Linchpin by Seth Godin at the moment!), but it’s that part of your brain saying, “you can’t do that”. I’ve made excuses to myself. Other parts of the business have taken over. My personal life has taken time…..excuses aren’t they? Feeble, I know!

But now I’ve woken up in the middle of June and have been given a big kick to take the risk and promote the training course I wrote in January for breastfeeding supporters. I feel really silly, but hopefully you can learn from my mistakes. Being in business is great, but you HAVE to take risks. You HAVE to push boundaries – your own and other people’s. I know what I’ve done is great, but did you know I was working on it? No, of course not. I haven’t told you!

So, here we go, out of my comfort zone (especially as I don’t generally use this blog for promoting my business):

2 hour self-delivery training DVD for breastfeeding supporters, antenatal teachers,  midwives and health   professionals. NOW AVAILABLE to order. The course is designed to help women support women get the right bra and know what to look for when being fitted for nursing bras.

One breastfeeding supporter who has reviewed it, said “This is fantastic! I wish I’d known about how bras fitted when I was breastfeeding, I may have prevented my mastitis! At least I can support my Mums better now”.

I’ll be setting a forum up to support individuals and breastfeeding groups with questions they get about bras and bra fitting during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Others of you may only want the DVD. Select the package that suits you. And PLEASE tell your friends, colleagues and breastfeeding supporters, doulas, health visitors!

DVD options

That’s it! Done! I’m out in the world, and what risk is there in telling you about my training DVD? Will you laugh at me? Maybe. Will that affectme? I guess not. And having done the work which I know will support more women become more comfortable during their time breastfeeding, then surely I’m doing you all a disservice by NOT stepping outside my comfort zone.

  1. I’m terrible at promoting what I have done. Thanks for the kick up the butt – I’m guilty of exactly what you have done. I’m glad I’m not the only one!

  3. Good for you! Nothing like having BFHAGs to gain momentum in your business!

    * BFHAGs = Big Fat Hairy Audacious GOALS ;o)

  4. Oh yes – I am currently dipping toes in Twitter and some new blog-based services – and it’s making me feel quite uneasy but quite excited at the same time.

  5. Bravery is something we all have to find when running our own businesses, and so lucky that you have Emma Wimhurst as your coach. She is exceptional. I see it all the time we put in all the research the hours of background and then are scared to soar high.
But going for it starts with a first step – and we were here to see it.
I thought I would share with you years ago when I first set up my business, the one area of business that scared the pants of me(and reduced me to tears) despite years of business acumen, was sales and marketinag and yet within 2 years of setting up I was a finalist in Excellence in Marketing in business awards – If you go for these things its amazing what you can learn about yourself and your skills and capabilities, we instantly assume the worst but what about if you assumed the best?
Good luck and if you @MandieHolgate or @BWNcouk I would be happy to RT your tweets to increase your exposure. Also feel free to promote on The Business Womans Network facebook page and the Linked in group – You can access both of these via the website – http://www.thebusinesswomansnetwork.co.uk and if you speak to my face book friend Sharon Fernadez she would be very interested as she is the owner of The Baby Book. I hope my free marketing ideas are useful – tons more of them, but you have the wonderful Emma Wimhurst looking after you – enjoy and keep us updated on how things go. Looks like it is your time to soar.xx
